"I trained a lot of horses for my father and we've been partners for a long time and we've always had fillies. So it's interesting to have a colt. I always thought if I was going to get here this week it would be for the Oaks — not the Derby."

Exercise rider and aspiring jockey, Kylie Wellington on making it as a woman rider: "Wayne (Lucas) loves hiring girls and feels we have a different way of riding and we can talk to the horses a little bit differently than the guys can."
Exercise rider and aspiring jockey, Kylie Wellingon, is in from Iowa for her first Derby week. "There are a lot of trainers who believe that girls get a long better with horses, but there are also trainers who think girls shouldn’t be out there."
"When I first started trying to gallop last year, it was hard because no one wanted to give me a chance. But now, since I’m good, people are watching and are complimenting me and are a lot more open," says Kylie Wellington, exercise rider for Wayne Lucas and an aspiring jockey who hopes to get some races in the fall.
"I was riding this horse and there were all these people watching, so I stopped so the kids could look at him and the mom came running over and said, 'They’re so proud that you’re a woman.' I didn’t realize that there are people — little girls and women —watching me out here and rooting for me," says Kylie Wellington, exercise rider for Wayne Lucas and an aspiring jockey.
